Unique disc - Vaino's songs

Fascinating fragments of the young Birgit Nilsson On May 12, 1948, Birgit Nilsson, fresh from her latest Royal Opera success as the Feldmarschallin in Strauss’ Der Rosenkavalier, took part in a broadcast con-cert for the Union of Swedish Musical Artists. She sang Vaino’s songs from Wilhelm Peterson-Berger’s Arnljot. These songs were part of Nilsson’s earliest repertoire. She sang the second song – with Elisabeth’s prayer from Tannhӓuser – at her first audition for the Music Academy in Stockholm in September, 1941 and must have studied it with her first teacher, Ragnar Blennow. This lacquer disc from the radio concert – it regrettably runs out just before the end of the second song – is the only documentation of Nilsson in this music and as far as we know her second solo recording. Had there been more lacquer discs ready we also might have been able to hear the upcoming Wagnerian as Gilda (!) in the Rigoletto quartet, which ended this broadcast seventy years ago. Birgit Nilsson is accompanied by the Swedish Radio Orchestra conducted by Ivar Hellman. This unique disc was for decades preserved in the collection of Karl-Ludvig Wiechel, Saltsjӧbaden. It is now owned by Lars Thelander, Malmӧ, and Gӧran Sӧderwall, Stockholm. (Playing time 5’48’’) Stefan Johansson You can buy the disc in the shop at Birgit Nilsson Museum from Sunday, August 12. Price 50 SEK.
